Fall Cupcakes: Last Minute Advice from Kimm

These are the best last-minute cupcake decorations for a few reasons:

  1. The decorations are chocolate and colored sugar. Two things you should probably have in your house if you don’t deprive yourself of happiness.
  2. It takes almost no time and very little skill.
  3. They look super fancy!

We’re going to start with the chocolate leaves. Melt about ½ cup of chocolate chips (or whatever chocolate you have in your house that you haven’t already consumed) in the microwave. Heat for 20-30 second increments, stirring in between until it’s melted. If you have a piping bag and tips, set that up with a small circle tip. If you don’t have piping bags, get a quart zip freezer bag and cut a tiny bit (less than 1/8 inch) off one of the bottom corners. Fill your bag with the melted chocolate.

Now, on a sheet of waxed paper, draw some leaf designs. I printed some from the internet and place my waxed paper over them so I could trace them with the chocolate.

Make sure you connect the chocolate in a few places so it won’t fall apart later. When you’ve made a bunch of leaves, put them flat in the fridge or freezer to harden.

Grab your cupcakes. You either baked and frosted them or got them premade from the store. I’m not judging you.

When the chocolate leaves are hard, take them out of the fridge and carefully peel them off the waxed paper. One by one press them gently into the frosting. They will start to melt if you leave them out or hold them too long.

Now, mix a little sugar (you can use regular or large baking crystals if you have them) with some food coloring. I did two colors, first yellow, then I added a bit of red to the leftover sugar to make orange. Sprinkle the sugar over the cupcakes. You’re done! Those are some classy cupcakes!
